Rock, Paper, Scissors

Rock, Paper, Scissors

I wrote a play some years ago, exploring the relationships and perspectives of three very different people, caught in wartime Afghanistan. At an early stage, my friend Michael Sanie expressed interest in writing an opera based on the play, and after several years of delays and struggles, here it is.

The opera is in three acts, each providing a platform for one of the characters. There is also a fourth character: an Afghan boy. It seems to me that we rarely hear the perspective of the people over whose lands we fight.

  1. Just got another rejection letter for the play (not the opera) – my fourth! By some standards I’ve hardly started. The challenge is getting good feedback so I know what to change.

A first play is probably not a great play in most cases. But I think it has some merit, so I’ll keep on at it.

  2. Where was the opera performed? It sounds interesting, both opera and book. Good luck with publishing. Yes, keep at it.

    1. We haven’t had a performance yet. A summer workshop is probably the best bet. Too busy to spend much time on it at present, but it’s nice to see it in print at least.
